So in full disclosure, I record The Young and the Restless. Don't judge. I watch it because it brings me back to the feelings of childhood, safe and protected. It stems back to the days when I would stay home from school sick and my mom would take care of me all day. She would set up a cozy spot on the couch for me with a pillow, blanket and stay home all day. In a large family, it was a rare occasion to have the attention of my mom all to myself for a WHOLE day. I would usually fall asleep on the couch and wake up to my mom doing laundry, this was a endless chore for her. She would set the ironing board up next to the couch, so she could iron and keep an an eye on me. She would watch The Young and the Restless and I would ask her about what was happening on the show. Was Victor still alive? Was Nick married to Sharon? Were Cricket and Danny still in love? She would only watch it once in awhile, but still knew the answers to all my questions.
Today, I'm doing the laundry for my own family. When the kids are in bed for the night, I set up the steamer and turn on the DVR to catch up on everything happening in Genoa City. It brings me back to the times with my mom. It makes me realize that in all of those little moments, all the things she did, were for us. So yes, I watch the Young and the Restless and try to create cozy spots on the couch for my kids when they get sick. They know about Victor, Nick, and know that Cricket now goes by Christine and is married to Paul. I probably should feel a bit guilty that they have seen a few episodes, but I figure that someday they might try and recreate all the things from their childhood that they remember fondly. And let's be honest, it's a really good show.
